Students, like the rest of us, spend an increasingly large percentage of their day engaging with online resources. It’s helpful to see how they are spending their time – and what categories of learning tools rise to the top.
What Trends Are We Seeing?
Comparing these reports year over year provides us insight into what digital tools students are increasingly using. Here's what we're seeing:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)’s presence in education tech tools will only continue to grow. From “AI Tutors” (such as Ck12.org) to tools with AI-powered elements (such as Kaltura’s “Class Genie”), ed tech companies are increasingly integrating AI to deliver personalized learning, automate routine tasks, and adapt in real time to keep pace with the evolving needs of students and educators.
- Gamified learning platforms continue to claim a large part of students’ online engagement. By incorporating game elements like points, levels, and rewards, these tools boost student motivation, encourage active participation, and make complex concepts easier to grasp. The result is a learning experience that’s both engaging and effective—meeting students where they are in the digital age.
- Literacy tools represent a larger (2+ percentage point) share of students’ time spent online as compared to the previous school year. This reflects a broader shift in digital learning, where technology-driven reading and comprehension resources are becoming central to classroom instruction and student engagement.
- Online learning tools now span a diverse mix of platforms and modalities, offering students a multitude of engaging ways to learn. The “Online Learning” category we covered above encompasses a captivating variety of dynamic tools for students across different modalities, such as video hosting and/or discussion platforms (Kaltura, Flipgrid/Flip - now part of Microsoft), language learning tools (Duolingo, Middlebury Interactive), computer science learning (Code.org), and even AI learning assistants (Ck12.org).
When Do Students Spend the Most Time Online?
Our usage data from the 2024-25 school year reveals that students are using their school-issued devices for online learning primarily outside of regular school hours: 76.2% of their total usage time happens after the school day ends, compared to just 23.8% during class hours.
These insights demonstrate that the devices are serving their intended purpose: extending learning opportunities beyond the classroom. It also underscores the critical importance of ensuring these students have consistent Internet access at home and in their communities to fully support their educational needs.
Similarly, glimpsing at weekday versus weekend usage shows us that the vast majority of learning takes place during weekday evenings – picking up around 4:00pm, peaking at 8:00pm, and tapering off by 10:00pm.
It’s encouraging to see this utilization mirroring the typical schedule of a K-12 student – and on the flip side, having this degree of insight into your students’ usage can help you identify any troubling or atypical patterns that may need to be addressed.

Comparing these lists year over year provides us insight into what digital tools students are increasingly using. Here are some trends we’re seeing this year:
- Increased usage of AI-powered tools. AI assistants (such as Grammarly) are topping the list in 2024. As this technology becomes ubiquitous, teaching students how to use it wisely will soon be an essential part of the modern classroom.
- The ability to track student progress is vital. As school districts pursue NETP’s vision of the ‘Portrait of a Graduate,’ which includes proficiency, using tools that will enable student progress to be quantified, tracked, and monitored over time (such as IXL.com) will be an important part of their strategy.
